Training for Mentors

Mentor Certificate

“Mentors are most successful when they receive thorough training before working with young people and receive coaching and support throughout their involvement.”
–Mass Mentoring Partnership

The mentor certificate is a four hour training course that is mandatory for new volunteers in PBHA mentoring programs, and strongly recommended for new PSN mentoring program volunteers. Volunteers need only attend the training once during their time in college.

The training covers:
Stages of the Mentor/Mentee Relationship
Mentoring Activities
Communication Strategies
Safety and Boundaries

Ideally, volunteers attend the Mentor Certificate together during a timeslot reserved for their program, but individuals are also welcome to register.

Mentoring for Experienced Volunteers
Although many of the skills required to be a quality mentor can be aquired through other work with youth, there are a few essential skills and pieces of knowledge that are specific to mentoring. This one hour training will cover essential information specific to mentoring and can substitute for the mandatory Mentor Certificate training for new mentors who have other substantial experience working with youth.

Former Summer Urban Program employees and volunteers who have been tutoring for 2+ years in a PBHA program qualify automatically. Others should contact Ariel Harms (harms@fas.harvard.edu) to check eligibility.
